Canción de la semana 09/08/2010: Electric Light Orchestra- Twilight

No es la canción más representativa de su estilo (ya que pertenece a su etapa final ochentera) pero este Twilight es tan ciencia-ficción-ochentero que parece sacado de series como Macross (Robotech) o Ulises 31. Completamente evocadora resulta comprensible que la escogieran para el opening del conocido dorama Densha Otoko (una conocida serie japonesa de sobre un otaku y una chica pija) y a raiz de eso se ha convertido en todo un icono de la cultura otaku.

Icono o no lo cierto es que desde el momento que ves el maravilloso opening de Densha Otoko no hace más que evocar batallas de robots gigantes en el cielo.

Esta semana vamos a poner una canción comercial de esas que supuestamente no deberían gustarme... Pero que lo cierto es que me gusta y mucho. P!nk, por su estilo tampoco debería gustarme. Es un Pop Rock cercano al R&B, pero lo cierto es que su música es tremendamente adictiva.

Yo nunca le había hecho mucho caso hasta que ví un fan-video de Farscape con esta Just Like a Pill y me encantaron ambos, tanto el vídeo como la canción... Desde entonces de vez en cuando me da por escuchar a P!nk y lo cierto es que tiene canciones que me gustan mucho.

Canción de la semana 03/05/2010: Erasure - Always

Supongo que es porque son los sonidos con los que crecí, pero lo cierto es que el electro-pop ochentero es una de mis debilidades. Cuando ya bien entrados los noventa los sonidos empezaron a alejarse de él y algún artista se empeñaba en seguir con ese sonido yo estaba vendida...

También desde pequeña he tenido siempre cierta fascinación por cualquier cosa que fuera de estilo oriental, así que cuando en 1994 Erasure sacó Always caí rendida ante sus pies. El maravilloso vídeo de estilo oriental que acompañaba a la canción me encantó e hizo que yo descubriera a estos ingleses que son una de las máximas expresiones del Synthpop. Este duo no sólo sacó clásicos como A Little Respect sino que además uno de sus miembros: Vince Clarke venía de otro clásicos de los ochenta como son Depeche Mode y Yazoo.

Esta semana he oído algo de ellos y me ha venido esta canción y lo mucho que gustó Erasure en su momento. I Say I Say I Say es un disco del que tengo muy buenos recuerdos, no sólo musicalmente sino por la estética de cuento de hadas que acompañaba a todo el disco.

Canción de la semana 12/04/2010: Billy Joel - Uptown Girl

Muchas veces me pasa que oigo una canción y me gusta, pero no me gusta quién la canta. Y me da mucha rabia. Por eso me da mucha alegría descubrir que en realidad esa canción que me gustaba en realidad es una versión. Ya me pasó con Hymn que pasó de ser una canción chunta-chunta a un delicioso pop ochentero y esta semana me ha vuelto a pasar con Uptown Girl.

La oí en su momento como una canción de alguna de esas bandas de chicos que florecieron en los 90, pero como esta a mí me pilló pasada la edad del pavo ya no me gustaba ese tipo de música (reconozco que con 16 años me gustaban... pero en cosa de un par de años se me pasó la tontería). Mi memoria me ha jugado una mala pasada porque estaba convencida que era de Backstreet Boys, pero no es de Westlife (lo mismo da que da lo mismo)... Y me dolía reconocer que me gustaba la canción.

El caso es que viendo este lunes el capítulo de Ashes to Ashes justo al principio aparece en un delirante videoclip... Y como esta tercera temporada de Ashes to Ashes está ambientada en 1983... cuando las bandas de chicos no existían, respiré con alivio al ver que la canción se convertía en otro delicioso ejemplo de pop ochentero, en este caso de la mano de Billy Joel

El vídeo, con Gene Hunt a la cabeza haciendo de mecánico no tiene desperdicio alguno...

Esta semana por el trabajo un compañero tenía puesto a los punkarras The Clash, a los cuales yo conocía por Should I Stay Or Should I Go del Rock Band. Pero luego resulta que al rato empezó a sonar I Fought The Law, canción que yo conocía por varios rockeros que la habían versionado, especialmente por Bryan Adams que la incluyó en un disco en directo Live! Live! Live!

Contrariamente a lo que podría parecer la canción no es suya... hay que remontarse al año 59 para la original, de un tal Sonny Curtis pero no tuvo mucha relevancia... En 1965 Bobby Fuller Four conseguirían cierto éxito con la canción, pero serían The Clash los que la harían famosa en 1979

Desde hace cosa de un mes me estoy enviciando a base de bien a esa invento del demonio llamado Rock Band y su batería de imitación (pero la mar de divertida cuando sabes perfectamente que nunca vas a tocar una batería en tu vida). Son muchas las canciones que no conocía y que estoy conociendo gracias al juego y esta semana toca una de ellas: Hier Kommt Alex, de unos punkarras alemanes llamados Die Toten Hosen (de los que no había oido hablar hasta que me encontré esta canción en el Rock Band)

La canción, en perfecto alemán, es de esas gritonas que te dan ganas de cantarlas a todo pulmón

Canción de la semana 08/12/2008: The Who - Baba O'Riley

Esta semana parece ser que tampoco va a tocar metal y además retrocedemos en el tiempo más allá de los ochenta hasta el año 1971 para encontranos a The Who y una pequeña maravilla de canción llamada Baba O'Riley. Una de las canciones pioneras en el uso de sintetizador es una maravilla músicalmente hablando y tiene un estribillo con una fuerza increible, a parte de una gran variedad de sonidos.

¿Cómo conocí esta canción de antes incluso de que yo naciera? Bueno, la culpa la tiene Life on Mars ya que en su primer capítulo suena la canción en una genial escena entre Liz y Sam que termina en una tienda de discos. Pero no es la única serie que usa la canción, también tenemos a CSI Nueva York que la tiene como openning.

Canción de la semana 01/12/2008: Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind

Esta semana también toca una canción que ha pasado por inumerables versiones y esta semana, por primera vez y sin que sirva de precedente, no va a ser metal... sino pop ochentero. La semana pasada tuvimos versión Power de un clásico de los ochenta y esta semana directamente tenemos un clásico de los ochenta: Always on My Mind de los Pet Shop Boys. A pesar de ser del año 87 no es una canción de la que recuerde de mi infancia sino que la descubrí hace cuatro o cinco años cuando no tenía nada que oír en el trabajo y un compañero me dejó un CD de grandes éxitos de los Pet Shop Boys y la dichosa canción se me pegó de lo lindo.

Los Pet Shop Boys son uno de esos grupos con los que creci. Esos playbacks o vídeos en programas musicales como "Tocata" o "A tope". Y como durante los 90, cuando yo ya era más consciente de la música que oía, seguían haciendo esa música ochentera de sintetizador me siguieron gustando...

Pero Always on My Mind no es una canción suya, sino que es una versión... a su vez de una versión. Investigando he encontrado la versión original Brenda Lee, de una cantante pop americana de los 60 que sacó la canción en 1972. Ese mismo año saldría la versión que luego versionarían Pet Shop Boys: Elvis Presley la convertiría en una de sus grandes canciones. La verdad es que su versión y la de Brenda Lee son bastante parecidas musicalmente hablando y sólo cambia el cantante.

La versión de los Pet Shop Boys son los ochenta en estado puro, pero también es una versión mucho más animada. Deja de ser una canción lenta para ser un medio tiempo con unos teclados sencillamente geniales. ¿Y porqué me ha dado por poner esta semana Always on My Mind? La respuesta es que cuando oí el CD en el trabajo me apunté la canción y conseguí un MP3, pero la verdad es que pese a ser también de los Pet Shop Boys era una versión alargada y mucho peor que la que había oído en el curro. No me gustaba tanto...

El caso es que esta semana haciendo limpieza de canciones por mi disco duro decidí buscar a ver si encontraba la versión buena de la canción... y me he encontrado tres versiones distintas de los Pet Shop Boys de la misma canción. Por un lado tenemos la primera versión (la buena) que salío de un programa tributo a Elvis y que en vista del éxito editaron como single en 1987. Luego en su siguiente disco de 1988 incluirían una nueva versión más estilo Acid house (bastante peor que la original)... Y luego está la versión que alargada denominada Prime Cuts Edit que fue editada para discotecas. La que a mí me gusta se puede conseguir en el single homónimo o el CD de grandes éxitos Discography: The Complete Singles Collection.
