Straczynski parece que por fin pasa página

Parece que por fin J. Michael Straczynski va a pasar página y dejar atrás Babylon 5. La verdad es que ya va siendo hora porque hace ya más de 10 años que terminó y lo cierto es que a día de hoy todavía no ha habido ninguna serie, en mi opinión que le haga sombra.

Ha habido muy buenas series, pero Babylon está un peldaño por encima de todas ellas por la redondez que tienen sus 5 años y su historia pensada (con matices) de principio a fin. Straczynski lleva desde 1997 intentado ampliar el universo de Babylon sin éxito. Siendo realista de todos sus intentos el único que parecía tener algo interesante detrás era Crusade, y realmente ha sido el único que realmente me ha dado pena que no saliera adelante. Pero el resto han sido un despropósito detrás de otro.

Pese a que Straczynski ya intentó pasar página con Jeremiah, que pese a ser una serie de encargo y que realmente la segunda temporada no terminó de cuajar, demostró que el talento de Straczynski seguía ahí. Pero luego se metió en el mundo de los comics (donde se ha ganado ya cierto nombre) y ahora está haciendo guiones para películas.

El caso es que el hombre parece un disco rayado en sus declaraciones, siempre habla de proyectos de series (que luego nunca salen a la luz) y de intentos de resucitar Babylon... el último ha sido esa rayada de mini-capítulos que eran The Lost Tales que realmente ya no aportan nada a una historia que está cerrada.

Pero por fin este fin de semana en las declaraciones previas a la San Diego Comic Con ha dicho definitivamene que deja atrás Babylon 5. Ya no intentará hacer más pilotos para spin-off para cable, ni telefilms ni películas para DVD de bajo presupuesto. Dice que si hace algo es una película para cine con un presupuesto decente y si no se hace nada.

So for the last few months, I've been giving this whole subject a lot of quiet thought. And I've come to a conclusion.

B5 as a five year story stands beautifully on its own. If anything else is to be continued from that story, it should be something that adds to the legacy of B5, rather than subtracts from it.

As well intentioned as Rangers and TLT were, as enticing as it was to return to those familiar waters, in the end I think they did more to subtract from the legacy than add to it. I don't regret having made them, because I needed to go through that to get to the point where I am now psychologically, but from where I sit now, I wouldn't make them again.

So I've let everyone up here know that I'm not interested in doing any more low-budget DVDs. I'm not interested in doing any low-budget cable things or small computer games. The only thing I would be interested in doing regarding Babylon 5 from this point on is a full- featured, big-budget feature film. It's that or nothing.

And if it's nothing, I'm totally cool with that because the original story stands on its own just fine. I'm not lobbying for it, I'm not asking fans to write in about it (nor should you) because such campaigns never really have much impact...that's simply the position I've taken up here. Lord knows I don't lack for other things to do these days. I'm busier on more prestige projects with terrific people and great film-makers than at any other time in my career.

At the end of the day, for me, it's not just a matter of getting more B5. It's a matter of getting more *good* B5 that respects what came before it and doesn't have to compromise visually or in terms of action. The original show deserves better than that, the surviving cast members deserve better than that, and the fans who have supported it over the years definitely deserve better than that. A lot better.

So I've drawn that line in the sand, and I'm happy living on whichever side of that line the universe puts me. Just thought you should know, 'cause it's your show too."

Por mi, sinceramente, la película se la pueden ahorrar. No creo que aporte nada a una historia que ya está perfecta como está. Quizás el universo de Babylon daba para más historias... quizás. Pero lo que está claro es que Straczynski no las tenía pensadas (salvo quizás Crusade) y que ahora mismo no tiene más ideas.

La parte positiva de todo esto es que sin la sombra de resucitar Babylon detrás, quizás Straczynski pueda volver a pensar y a crear otra historia. Lástima que ahora le haya dado por ir a hacer cine. Yo confío en que algún día este hombre volverá a crear una historia tan redonda como lo ha sido Babylon 5. De momento ha dado el primer paso: ha pasado página.
